There's more to painting than simply putting paint on canvas. This latest commission took more time in research than it did in execution. It is based solely on two old, faded Second World War photos portraying the commissioner's father and a photo he took from a Qantas Empire flying boat in 1943. The final offering is entitled "Horn Island Escort" and shows the Empire flying boat protected by two 75 Squadron RAAF P-40 Kittyhawks crossing the Kikori River delta in New Guinea en route from Horn Island to Tanamerah, Dutch New Guinea. By this time the remaining requisitioned Empire flying boats had been passed from RAAF to Qantas ownership.
